Parliament Speaker of Iran Ali Larijani issued a statement on the occasion of the 29th anniversary of the chemical bombing of the city of Sardasht located in northwestern Iran by Saddam regime.
“The chemical bombing of Sardasht which led to the demise of up to 110 people and injury of up to 5000 innocent people was a historical catastrophe with bitter consequences,” said Larijani in his message which was read in a relevant ceremony in Sardasht on Monday.
Emphasizing that Sardash people are emblems of endurance and tolerance, Larijani urged the officials do their best to back people of Sardasht and try to reduce their suffering by inspiring vitality and life among the people.
A ceremony was held on Monday in Sardasht with the presence of chemically injured people and bereaved families of the victims, local officials and Iraqi Kurdistan Region Minister of Martyrs and Anfal Affairs Mahmoud Haji Salih to mark the catastrophic day.
Sardasht of West Azerbaijan province was hit by Iraqi chemical weapons on 28 of June, 1987. The attacks killed 116 citizens and injured over 5,000.
